Bengkarek Village, located in the Kapuas-Ambawang River Peat Hydrological Unit, includes peatlands up to 2 meters deep in four of its seven sub-villages. Transportation relies on motorcycles and boats.
The dominant land cover features an agroforestry system of rubber, coffee, and pepper, mainly on mineral soils, while annual crops are cultivated in peatlands. Oil palm plantations managed under plasma schemes are the second largest land use, with secondary forests covering approximately 600 hectares. Challenges such as low rubber prices, declining coffee productivity, and pepper crop failure due to frequent flooding have led farmers to shift to oil palm and annual crops.
Efforts to improve rubber-coffee agroforestry include training on good agricultural practices, post-harvest handling, and establishing demonstration plots as learning sites. These initiatives aim to enhance productivity, meet market standards, and increase farmer incomes.
