Abstract:

Baru Village, located within the Sugihan-Saleh River Peat Hydrological Unit and near the Padang Sugihan Wildlife Reserve, is dominated by oil palm plantations, with secondary peat forests and small-scale rubber cultivation and rice fields. Rice farming in inland swamps and tidal wetlands is constrained by minimal management and unpredictable flooding, leaving many swampy areas unused.
Efforts to improve land use include modifying water management, developing agro-silvo-fishery systems, promoting stingless beekeeping, and utilizing livestock manure for organic fertilizer production. These initiatives, led by the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes), aim to enhance food security, environmental sustainability, and community livelihoods.
